On July 6th 2024, a 5 hour and 29 minute Drum & Bass set, compiled here at The Orange Hut, was aired on Resonance FM, between the hours of 2:00am and 7:30am in the morning. It was originally offered to Ed Baxter back in 2023 as a mix to listen to in retirement. However, he suggested it be aired on Resonance FM… And, after much ummm-ing and arrr-ing, it eventually was aired. While we cannot shared the actual mix here, due to copyright, we can provide the track listing and submission notes sent to Resonance FM for their consideration.

Title: 2024_06_22 – DRUM & BASS SET
Artist: Various Artists (see ‘Track Listing’ below)
Curated and mixed by: Kay Jay (Karl J Richard)
Description: This is a curated 5 hour 29 minute mix of some of the better know underground Drum & Bass anthems from club nights such as SPEED, METALHEADZ, SWERVE and TRIBAL DANCE held in the 1990s.
As the majority of these anthems were circulating exclusively on limited dub-plate release during this period, many were not commercially released until after 2000. Thus the tracks in this mix have been predominantly selected from between 1993 and 2003.
This era of Drum & Bass saw many well-known main stream artists, who wanted their music to be played in underground dance clubs of the time, collaborating with relatively unknown Drum & Bass producers. Many of these respective remixes and creative ventures went on to be released on mainstream and underground record labels to great acclaim.
Three moments of particular note during this period are: Roni Size winning the Mercury Music prize, Goldie releasing his classic Timeless album (which was in part responsible for him receiving an MBE), SHY FX playing on Top-of-the-Pops. The 10 years between ’93 and ’03 saw the frenetic complexity of rhythms used in Drum & Bass (usually with BPMs exceeding 180) combine into a unique style of high-energy urban dance music that was not only futuristic (many of its themes were inspired by sensibilities found in films such as Bladerunner, Star Wars, Dune, et al.), but was also distinctively British, drawing inspiration from, as well as celebrating, many ethnic styles and types of music.
Drum & Bass also inspired many interesting debates around copyright law, particularly in the UK, due to the common practice of sampling other recording artists (mainly for drum loop samples), quotes and soundscapes from film sound tracks, which became a defining and distinctive feature of composition in this form of dance music.
In many ways, it could be argued that Drum & Bass is the definitive hi-octane dance ‘music concrete’. Despite much of this music being over thirty years old now, it still sounds as unique today as it did back when it was being played on pirate radio stations such as Kool FM and Don FM back in the 90s.
